The perils of professional writing

I realised today that writing professionally (for 23 years!) has, in some ways, stunted my writing. The process of writing as a news journalist, where speed and formula are important, makes it really hard to avoid lapsing into cliches. In fact, you tend to often think in cliches. I’m going to try and break out of this over the next few months. It’s a process, not a goal, but I want to engage in the practice of writing more often, and more elegantly.
